What is asthma?

In short asthma is the inflammation of the airways, called the bronchi. These are the small tubes that carry air into and out of the lungs. When an asthma sufferer comes into contact with an irritant (trigger) the muscles surrounding the walls of the bronchi tighten and the lining of the airways swell and become inflamed. This makes it difficult to breathe naturally and results in the symptoms of asthma which can include:

  • Trouble breathing

  • Tightness in the chest

  • Coughing and wheezing

An asthma attack is a severe and debilitating onset of the above symptoms. Asthma attacks can vary greatly in severity, may require hospital attention and can in some cases even be life threatening.

We currently don’t know the exact causes leading to a diagnosis of asthma. However you may be more likely to suffer if you have a family history of asthma, eczema or certain allergies. Certain environmental factors combined with this history are likely to influence whether someone develops asthma.

Treatment of asthma

There is no current cure for asthma however the condition can be managed by a number of treatments that are able to control and alleviate symptoms. These include certain medications, lifestyle advice and the process of identifying irritants that could lead to an attack.

Medications in the UK currently include:

  • Reliever inhalers

  • Preventer inhalers

  • Oral steroids (steroid tablets)

How can asthma affect my life insurance application?

The affect of asthma on your life insurance application is determined by both the severity and the recency of your symptoms. Many asthma suffers are diagnosed early on in life or as children and as a result the condition is controlled and often very mild. In these cases it is possible for an insurer to issue ‘standard terms’ meaning your application is treated no differently to an individual who doesn’t suffer from asthma.

If the condition is more severe and has resulted in either hospital attention or a prescription of steroid tablets during the past 2 years, this could have an effect resulting in either ‘rated premiums’ meaning the cost of the policy is increased to take into account the additional risk of the applicant, or alternatively the insurer may wish to write to your GP for clarification on your exact diagnosis.

Certain lifestyle choices in combination with the disclosure of asthma may also make a difference such as smoking or heavy drinking. Our consultants are experienced in working with people who have pre-existing conditions and can work with you to help find the best and most appropriate insure for your particular circumstances.

It is important to note that not all insurers are the same and they all treat various medical disclosures differently. Therefore it is useful to talk over your circumstances with one of our consultants. You can either obtain a quote using our online system using the ‘compare online’ button below, or if you would rather talk to us prior to deciding on a policy click the ‘talk to us’ button and we’ll get in touch to talk you through your options.
